As fall approaches and temperatures start to drop, your home’s heating system becomes essential again. But if some rooms feel colder than others or your energy bills seem unusually high, your radiators or thermostats might not be working as efficiently as they should. The good news is that a few simple checks and maintenance steps can make a big difference. Here’s a practical guide to keeping your heating system in top shape for comfort and efficiency all winter long.
Start with a Thorough Inspection
Before the heating season begins, take a few minutes to inspect each radiator in your home. Make sure they heat evenly across the surface and that the thermostats respond when you adjust the temperature. A radiator that’s warm only at the top may have trapped air, while one that stays cold could have a stuck valve.
Go room by room and note any irregularities. This will help you identify problem areas and ensure your home heats evenly once the system is running regularly.
Bleed the Radiators
Air trapped inside radiators is one of the most common causes of uneven heating. Fortunately, it’s easy to fix.
- Turn off the heat so the water in the system stops circulating.
- Locate the bleed valve—usually a small square or slotted screw near the top of the radiator.
- Use a radiator key or flathead screwdriver to slowly open the valve. Hold a cloth or small container underneath to catch any water.
- When a steady stream of water (without air bubbles) flows out, close the valve tightly.
After bleeding your radiators, check the pressure gauge on your boiler. Most residential systems should read between 12 and 15 psi. If the pressure is too low, follow your boiler’s instructions to add water until it’s back in range.
Make Sure Thermostats Are Working Properly
A thermostat that doesn’t respond may indicate a stuck valve behind it—especially after months of disuse during the summer. To test it, remove the thermostat head and gently press the small metal pin that sticks out of the valve. It should move in and out freely. If it’s stuck, gently loosen it with your fingers or a light tap with pliers—never force it, as that can cause damage.
Once the pin moves freely, reattach the thermostat and check that the radiator heats up when you turn the temperature up.
Keep Airflow Around Radiators Clear
Even a perfectly functioning radiator can’t heat a room efficiently if it’s blocked. Heavy curtains, furniture, or long window sills can trap heat and cause the thermostat to misread the room temperature.
Make sure there’s at least 4–6 inches of space in front of and above each radiator. This allows warm air to circulate freely and helps maintain a consistent temperature throughout the room.
Clean Radiators Regularly
Dust and debris can build up inside and around radiators, reducing their ability to radiate heat effectively. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment or a radiator cleaning brush to remove dust from between the fins and behind the unit. This not only improves efficiency but also helps maintain better indoor air quality.
A thorough cleaning once a year—ideally before heating season—should be enough, though homes with pets or high dust levels may need more frequent attention.
Consider Upgrading Old Thermostats
If your thermostats are more than 10–15 years old, replacing them could be a smart investment. Modern thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) are more precise and can help reduce energy use. You might also consider smart thermostats or smart radiator valves that automatically adjust heating based on your schedule or occupancy. While they cost more upfront, they often pay for themselves through lower energy bills.
Balance the Heating System
If some rooms are too warm while others stay chilly, your system may need balancing. This means adjusting the flow of hot water to each radiator so that all rooms heat evenly. While you can attempt this yourself, many homeowners prefer to have an HVAC technician handle it. A properly balanced system improves comfort and can significantly reduce energy consumption.
Monitor Your Energy Use
Once you’ve checked and maintained your radiators and thermostats, keep an eye on your energy usage. Many utility companies offer online tools or smart meters that let you track your consumption. A steady or reduced energy use after maintenance is a good sign that your system is running efficiently.
A Small Effort with Big Rewards
Maintaining your radiators and thermostats doesn’t take much time, but it can make a noticeable difference in both comfort and cost. Spending just half an hour a couple of times a year can prevent problems, extend the life of your heating system, and ensure a warm, energy-efficient home all winter long.
